chipping the engine

Do you want more power, better torque and more economical driving with your car? Engine chipping, also called chip tuning or engine optimization, offers the possibility of safely improving your car's performance by adjusting the engine management computer (ECU) software. At Faay Auto Groep in Nieuwegein, we specialize in professional chip tuning for all car brands. RDW recognized car company With over 25 years of experience, we provide responsible and safe chip tuning that utilizes the full potential of your engine without compromising reliability.

What is Motor Chipping?

Engine chipping involves modifying the software in your car's ECU (Engine Control Unit) to achieve better performance. Modern cars are controlled by sophisticated computers that regulate hundreds of parameters: injection timing, injection pressure, boost pressure (for turbocharged engines), air-fuel ratio, ignition timing, and much more. The manufacturer often programs the ECU conservatively, allowing for variations in fuel quality, climate, and to allow for the same engine to be used in different models with different power outputs.

By optimizing the ECU software, we can utilize these margins and make the engine operate more efficiently within safe limits. The result is more power, more torque, and often even lower fuel consumption during normal use.

Benefits of Engine Chipping at Faay Auto Group

  • More power: 15-40% power gain depending on engine type
  • More torque: 20-45% extra pulling power, especially with diesel engines
  • Smoother engine character: More direct throttle response and more power at lower revs
  • Fuel savings possible: With adjusted driving behavior, savings of up to 1.5 liters/100 km
  • Better overtaking capacity: Safer overtaking due to more available power
  • Ideal for trailer/caravan: Extra torque makes pulling much easier
  • Reversible: Original software can always be installed back
  • Safe and reliable: Within factory limits of engine and drivetrain

Which Cars is Chip Tuning Suitable for?

Chip tuning is possible for virtually all modern cars with electronic engine control:

Best results with:

  • Turbodiesel engines: Most potential, often 25-40% power gain possible
  • Turbo petrol engines: Good profit possible, 15-35% power increase
  • Downsizing engines: Small turbo engines (1.0-1.6 liters) respond excellently to tuning

Limited options at:

  • Naturally aspirated (non-turbo) petrol engines: Only 5-15% profit possible
  • Very old cars: Cars from before 2000 often have mechanical injection systems
  • Already highly tuned engines: Sports models are often already optimally adjusted

The Chip Tuning Process at Faay Auto Group

Chipping your car with us follows a careful process:

  1. Intake and advice: We discuss your wishes and advise you on the options for your specific car.
  2. Check technical condition: For safe tuning your car must be in good technical condition
  3. Reading original software: The original ECU software is read out and stored safely
  4. Software optimization: Specialized tuners adjust the software according to proven protocols
  5. Writing new software: The optimized software is written into the ECU
  6. Test drive and inspection: Extensive test drive to verify operation and performance
  7. Delivery with certificate: You will receive a certificate with the new asset data

The entire process takes an average of 2-3 hours. Often, you can simply wait while we optimize your car.

Cost of Motor Chipping

Chip tuning costs vary depending on the car make, model and the complexity of the ECU:

  • Standard passenger cars: €350 – €550
  • Premium brands (Audi, BMW, Mercedes): €450 – €750
  • Vans and light commercial vehicles: €400 – €650
  • SUVs and larger vehicles: €450 – €800
  • Eco-tuning (fuel saving): €350 – €550
  • Restore original software: €80 – €150

Included in the price: reading original software, optimization, writing new software, test drive, certificate and warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions about Motor Chipping

Is chip tuning bad for the engine?

No, professionally performed chip tuning within safe limits is not harmful to the engine. We always stay within the limits of the engine components. The manufacturer incorporates a substantial safety margin, which we partially utilize. Important: the car must be technically well-maintained and you must adhere to the maintenance intervals. A poorly maintained car should not be chipped.

Does chip tuning void my factory warranty?

This depends on the dealer and the specific situation. Officially, the dealer can refuse warranty coverage if it can be proven that damage was caused by the chip tuning. In practice, this is difficult to prove. The ECU usually doesn't register that the software has been modified, unless specifically checked using factory equipment. We can always reinstall the original software before a warranty visit. After the warranty period, this is, of course, no longer an issue.

Do I need to report chip tuning to my insurance company?

Legally, you must report any modifications to your car to your insurer. In practice, few people do this with chip tuning because it's not a visible modification. If you do report it, your premium may increase slightly (€50-150 per year), but you won't be eligible for a reduction in damages. We recommend reporting it for sporty or expensive cars. The RDW (Netherlands Vehicle Authority) doesn't require reporting chip tuning as long as the emissions remain within the permitted limits.

How much fuel does chip tuning save?

This depends heavily on your driving style. With the same driving style as before the tuning, you'll consume about the same or slightly more fuel. However, because more torque is available at low revs, you can save up to 0.5-1.5 liters per 100 km with adjusted driving style (shifting earlier, using less throttle). Eco-tuning focuses specifically on fuel economy rather than maximum power and can achieve savings of 5-15%.

Can chip tuning be reversed?

Yes, absolutely. We always securely store the original software. We can restore the original factory software at any time, ensuring your car will work exactly as it did when you first bought it from the showroom. This is useful when selling your car, during a warranty claim, or if you want to revert to the original software for any reason.

What is the difference between chip tuning and a tuning box?

Chip tuning directly modifies the software in the ECU – the permanent solution with the best results. A tuning box is an external device placed between sensors and the ECU that manipulates signals. Disadvantages of a box: less accurate, can cause error codes, often affects only one parameter, and the ECU "fights" against the distorted signals. Chip tuning is more professional and delivers better results without the drawbacks. Tuning boxes are only worthwhile if you absolutely want to leave the original ECU untouched.

Which brands can you chip?

We can chip virtually all European, Japanese, and American brands: Volkswagen, Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, Ford, Opel, Renault, Peugeot, Citroën, Seat, Skoda, Toyota, Nissan, Mazda, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Jeep, Fiat, Alfa Romeo, and many others. We can also chip virtually any van, such as the VW Transporter, Ford Transit, Mercedes Sprinter, or Renault Traffic. Not sure if your car is compatible? Contact us with your license plate number, and we'll check the options.

Do parts wear out faster after chip tuning?

With professional Stage 1 tuning (software only, no extreme power gains), additional wear is minimal. The clutch, gearbox, and drivetrain are designed by the manufacturer with a generous safety margin. In cars that are regularly subjected to heavy loads (towing a trailer, living uphill, sporty driving), the clutch may wear out slightly sooner. With Stage 2/3 tuning with hardware modifications and extreme power gains, strengthening the clutch and drivetrain may be necessary. For normal use with Stage 1 tuning, you don't need to worry.
